Firefox Search Box Hacks, Tips and Tweaks

The search box in Firefox as totally revolutionized the way we deal with search engines on a day to day basis. I don’t go to Google.com to do my searching anymore - I do it from there. There are many more tips, tweaks and tools you can use to get the most out of this built in browser innovation.

Get More Firefox Search Plugins

The first place to check out would be Mozilla’s own search engine page. From here you can add many of the top search engines from around the Web. From Live.com to Wikipedia to even Flickr - the best of the best are all listed.

To remove one, click on your search box and select “Manage Search Engines…”. On that new options window you can sort your search engines and remove the ones you don’t want.

Resize the Firefox Search Box

Need the Firefox search box to be a little wider or narrower by default. This can easily be taken care of in your userChrome.css file. This special file might be located in different places depending on your computer’s OS.

Add this to the userChrome.css file:

#searchbar { -moz-box-flex: 400 !important; } #search-container { -moz-box-flex: 400 !important; }

This would make the search box 400 pixels wide. Change that number to a higher or lower value both places to change the size of the search box. Now save and restart Firefox, and your search box should be a different size.

Open a Search in a New Tab

By default, Firefox will open your search up in the current tab you are in. If you want it to be opened up in a new tab - type in our old friend, about:config into the address bar and search for this string: browser.search.openintab

You have to change browser.search.openintab from false to true.

Add Any Search Box to your Search Toolbar

Next, to becoming a true searching guru - you need to pick up the Add to Search Bar extension for Firefox. This extension will allow you to right-click any search box and select to add it to your Firefox search bar.

Here are a few other search extensions to try out.

Jump to the Firefox Search Box via Your Keyboard

Want to jump to the Firefox search box without using your mouse? Here is a keyboard shortcut to get the job done: Ctrl/Cmd+K

Clean Out Your Search Box History

Want to clear out your search history and start fresh? This is another search bar issue that some people have a problem figuring out how to do. Go to:

Tools > Options > Privacy

Then click on the “Settings…” button under Private Data. From there a new box will come up and allow you to tweak how much Firefox remembers about you. Saved Form Information is what you want if you’re looking to clear your searching history. Now go to Tools > Clear Private Private Data and you should be cleaned out.

Change Default Search in Firefox

Tired of having Google as the default search engine in Firefox? Maybe it is another search engine’s turn to be on top?! If you feel the urge to dethrone Google as the default search engine for your Firefox search box - this is how you can get it done:

In your address bar, type in: “about:config”

Inside of the filter search box, type in:

browser.search.defaultenginename

Double click that entry (or right click and choose “Modify”) and then type in the name of the search engine you wish to have as the default search engine. It must be one that you already have installed and also make sure you type in the name correctly.

Now if you type in “Yahoo”, restart Firefox and when your browser comes back up you will see the red Yahoo “Y” and Yahoo as your default search engine.

Change Default Search Engine on Firefox

I think most of us already know that when you type in anything on the address bar on Firefox address bar, it will automatically search the word using Google search engine.

Some of you probably hates Google so much (because they banned you for fraud clicking on Google Adsense) that you rather use other search engine. Maybe you a movie fanatic, and you mostly use IMDB to check out latest movie reviews or maybe you prefer Yahoo! and even MSN (unless you are working for Microsoft, I don’t know why would anyone use this).

Yes, I know you can create your own customized search engine plugin to handle it. If you do not know how to create search plugin for Firefox, I already posted one article on doing that here and here (for IE).

This tutorial will show you how to tweak the settings so that you can search right away from the address bar using your favorite search engine.

  1. First of all, open our favorite and the best browser of the world, Mozilla Firefox. :)
  2. Place focus on address bar or press F6 shortcut key to do the same. For more shortcut keys in Firefox, click here.
  3. Type about:config and hit Enter.
  4. This will load a page full of configuration and settings available for Firefox browser. Most of the options are not available through menu or panels.
  5. On the Filter text, type in Keyword.URL and hit Enter
  6. Look at the string on Value field. This field is the search URL.firefoxkeywordurl
  7. Based on the screen shot above, the search URL is
  8. This means if I enter “Search Plugin” in my Firefox address bar, it will automatically convert to
  9. The best thing about this is you don’t even need to specify replacement character like we need to do for IE as shown on previous post.
  10. If you want to modify the Value to other web site, just change the field value.firefoxkeywordurl2
  11. By default, you can start to use this settings right away. In case it doesn’t work, please make sure the keyword.enabled settings is set to true.
  12. To verify the settings, perform step (3) and on Filter text, type Keyword.Enabled and hit Enter.
  13. The default value is true. If it is false, searching using address bar won’t work anymore. Set to true to enable it.

That’s it, folks. Another short tutorial to enhance your browsing experience. Have fun tweaking.

For IE user who wants to tweak their browser, I already written a post about it here.
